LIFE’S JOURNEY by Penina Schleider
Life’s Journey is inspired by the teaching of the Ben Yehoyada on the Gemara in Berachos 3b, where Rabbi Yosei says, “Once I was walking on the road…”—a phrase that reveals far more than travel. It speaks to the soul of the one who walks not to escape, but to become. This painting reflects that idea: the difference between the one who rushes to the end and the one who savors each step, knowing that every moment along the way is divinely placed.
While painting this piece, I felt deeply connected to the idea of a “traveler who goes”—someone who walks with trust, knowing that every twist in the road is part of a path guided by Hashem. That awareness, that quiet faith in the journey itself, became the heartbeat of the painting.
To the side of the path stands a quiet ruin—and beside it, a small bird. This delicate detail is drawn from the Midrash, where Rabbi Yosei, while praying in a ruin, hears a divine voice weeping like a dove, mourning the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. That bas kol, gentle yet eternal, calls out even today. In the painting, the bird near the ruin becomes a living whisper of that voice—longing for return, carrying the cry of exile, and the hope of redemption.
At its core, Life’s Journey is a prayer for personal geula—that each of us may feel the presence of Hashem in our own path, and that through walking it with faith and joy, we come closer to the true redemption.
